BLADE LIFE: Grand Opening Weekend at Pier 62

Grand Opening at Pier 62

Pier 62 Skate Park is designed for some serious flow skating. With the smooth cement, variety of obstacles, and abundant transitions, you find yourself lacing the whole park in one run. Pier 62 is filled with your favorite obstacles and a variety of coping styles for all types of rollerbladers. The park also evokes a creative mind when piecing together tricks for a line. Pier 62 is city owned and funded, so the entrance is free. The park doesn’t require any padding, and has proven to be a great place to skate or just enjoy the view on the Hudson River. Best of all, it’s located on the West Side Highway, which is close to several of NYC’s most famous street spots…

Amazing style. Skates in shorts. Killa Beez. Doesn’t this guy kinda look familiar? Well, he should. His name is Andre Stamenkovic and he is the brother of USD Pro Demetrious George. Andre recently moved to New York City, got back into skating, and enjoys the opportunity to roll at Pier 62. I saw him lacing this Top Soul all the way through this wavy kink quarter pipe and managed to get a great picture. I shot this with one strobe on the flat in front of Andre.

Shardy Nieves is an aspiring NYC photographer and a talented skater. He picked up a Nikon D70 camera about three months ago and is producing phenomenal work. As a Bronx native, Pier 62 Skate Park is a big deal to Shardy. He emphasizes the creative possibilities of Pier 62 with this Soul Up the corner of a quarter pipe. This picture was shot with two strobes, one to the right and one to the back.

I met Georgie Davis during the Grand Opening Weekend at Pier 62. He proves himself as a very talented New York City skater as he laces this 270 Top Soul perfectly. Georgie is a young athlete and shows potential to be one of the scene’s newest talents. He currenty lives on the Upper West Side and can be found killin’ it throughout the city. I shot this picture with one strobe on stand, set high and directly behind me.

Jesus Medina is an exceptional skater out of Poughkeepsie, New York. His enormous trick vocabulary makes him one of New York’s most gifted bladers. He laced this Full Cab Rough Soyale on this down ledge along with several other stunts. Plan to see Jesus lacing tricks and winning competitions throughout New York City all summer long. For this shot I used one strobe to the front and left.

While running through a line at Pier 62 I got this shot of Shardy transitioning the corner of the pyramid. The flow of the park allows Shardy to get some great air throughout his runs. This photo was shot using two strobes, one on either side of me.

Chris Kolodziej is out of Clifton, New Jersey, and constantly progressing as an artistic skater. Chris is known for his large trick vocabulary and unique style. He is also one to be able to skate any given obstacle. In this shot he laces Kind Grind on this waist-high square down rail. I took this picture with one strobe next to me and to the left.

Never caught this guy’s name but man does he rip Pier 62 Skate Park. He is a talented skater who uses his speed and the design of the park to his advantage. I captured this Huge 180 Mute as he launched out of the transition and over the park’s entrance. For this picture I used two strobes, one to my low left and the other on stand behind me.
