BLADE LIFE: Interview with Andrew Nemiroski

Andrew Nemiroski

Andrew, since this time I’m doing an interview WITH you as opposed to asking you to shoot photos for somebody else’s deal, let’s start with “Killin’ It.” Your DVD has been out for a little over six months now; what have some of the reactions been? How is it selling?

I sold all the books a couple of months ago and so far people have been digging it! I heard there is a “Killin’ It” review in the new issue of ONE, but I haven’t seen it yet. I’ll make another video in the future for sure though.

Now, you’re more into filming than photography, granted you have been making online edits for some time, but what made you want to make a full-on skate DVD?

Wasn’t feeling a lot of the online shit being posted and the Alien Workshop video “Mind Field” really got me inspired to make something with a photo/video collaboration.

Andrew Nemiroski

Now, I’ve asked someone this question in the past but I kind of anticipated what he was going to say. Did you get into photography because of blading? Like, had you never strapped up a pair of skates, do you think you would have still heard the calling and picked up a camera?

Blading got me into blade photography, blade photography got me into flash photography, but I didn’t like doing it. If it weren’t for blading I probably would have still picked up a camera. I mostly shoot film now though. Most of the photos in “Killin’ It” weren’t even skate photos. Skate photography sometimes bores me.

Andrew Nemiroski

Do you prefer filming as opposed to being filmed? Or is there some kind of equal love for both? Like, I get just as juiced writing about blading as I do actually blading, however, only one of them prevents me from getting fat.

It mostly depends on who I am filming. Some people are fun to film; some don’t really know what’s going on. The same goes with taking a photo. And it doesn’t even have to be a skate photo. Occasionally I find myself making art of other people to be awkward. Being filmed by someone who knows what they are doing and can freak the .3 is awesome though. Seems like AJ and Broskow have pretty much mastered filming together. I get more juiced when I land something than when I take a photo. Don’t get me wrong though, photos and videos are really fun, but skating is just way tighter.

Andrew Nemiroski

As I sit here and write these questions, I’m supposed to be coming up with a dialogue scene for one of my fiction classes. Clearly, I’m using class-time wisely. 😉 With that being said, I know you just graduated from high school, what are your plans for college? Where are you going and what will you be studying?

Ahh, I don’t like thinking about this. Of course, finally graduating high school was relieving. I’m enrolled for engineering at Boston University. Hopefully I’ll follow through with it.

What’s your favorite part about Boston? Well, in the couple of weeks so far that you’ve lived there.

Going from the lame suburbs to a sick city was a great change. Biking real fast through traffic is the best. And now actually being able to skate the city with other rollerbladers, whenever, is rad. See a bunch of pros just skating around randomly, uhhh…

Andrew Nemiroski

Five things that New Jersey does better than Massachusetts?

Nothing, place is a chest now. NJ blade scene isn’t as rad without Gnar Mobile anymore.

Andrew Nemiroski

I get a lot of e-mails and Facebook messages from dudes that want to do one of these interviews because they have “a lot they need to get off of their chest.” Do you have anything pressing that just needs to be heard by the blading masses?

Put more effort into what you’re doing, whether you’re shredding or documenting it. Make it look appealing. “Strange Creatures,” “Honey Baked,” Nick Norton’s “Low Life” video, that shit is gnar. I think I spent more time on this interview than should be spent, ha ha.

What makes a good photo? You know what I mean? Like, when you’re shooting a skater, are you mainly focused on getting the trick/obstacle or are you trying to capture something else?

An interesting obstacle is key for photos. Skating cool obstacles usually makes your blading look sicker. Some spots are photogenic and some aren’t, no matter what angle you get. I aim for my photos to be pleasing to look at for more than just the trick. Videos should focus on the trick more though. Don’t film the flowers in the foreground in slow motion, no one gives a shit. Someone who can take a good photo can make something look way sweeter than in reality. Photos and videos should depend on the timing and lighting. Certain places look way better at a certain time of day. You don’t even need flashes sometimes, that stuff is way overrated.

What’s the beezie situation for you Nemo? Did you take the lift out of some Jersey Girl’s hair by moving up on the east coast?

Keepin’ it one fousandddd dawg.

Who are your favorite people to blade with? To watch?

I like to blade with and watch anyone tubular and that shreds cool spots like the Phoenix dudes, Strange dudes, Gnar Mobile, Georgia dudes, and of course Alf, Sizemore, Quintin Lamb, Coopnasty, Ace Kieffer, Tim Kelly :/, and Erik Burrow. Best guys to watch blade lately is the “Honey Baked” dudes, Gabriel Hyden, Mike Lilly, Jon Jon Bolino, Sean Santamaria, Marc Moreno, Andrew Jacuzzi, Erik Stokley, Chris Dafick, Keaton Newsome, and some more rad bladers.

Andrew Nemiroski

Well, thanks so much for the photos and taking the time to answer these questions. As a fellow blader/college student, from experience, I wish you the best of luck and hope that you can fit some more blading into your schedule than I have been able to lately. I try to remember that college ain’t always like what we see in the movies, and that it doesn’t hurt for skaters to have a degree to back up the knowledge picked up at the park and in the streets. Shout-outs, “thank yous,” shameless plugs?

Buy “Strange Creatures!” Amir Amadi a real talented guy, he’ll blaaast you out.

this guy is ice dog. check out all the new progressive skating coming from Josh Letona and Omar Wysong. This guy isnt pushing the sport, Ive seen all of these tricks before. David Jones is doing backflip to soul. Have you seen Wysongs handflips? What about Letonas negative sidewalks? There are hot new tricks out there that he’s not doing, he’s just trying to be all cool looking with his David Copperfield magician hat.

Brazilionaire is the only one making good videos right now. I think he is the new big time industry leader.

Get some Gibbon Slacklines or go home bitch.

  • CoolGuyInUtah - September 28th, 2010

Probably the most pretentious interviews I’ve ever read. This kid is seriously too cool for rollerblading. He was cooler when people didn’t know about him and now his ego is bigger than the state of New Jersey. What a shame.

  • shane - September 28th, 2010

There’s more to NJ than just 1 skate “crew.” Sad to see how people react to a few dudes moving. lol like it’s a national tragedy. They hate the state so much, yet all the past edits they came out with kept throwing the NJ title around. Its not the greatest state to skate in, but u make the best out of the situation. NJ def has people who can roll for sure..

  • big joe - September 30th, 2010

hey smokes I agree with you man and to the person saying Brazillionare is leading the industry in edits man you must be smoking some bomb crack brazil is a wanna be baller who attempts to make selected bladers look like rappers and rockstars
