BLADE LIFE: Interview with Shain Lapointe

Shain Lapointe

The first time I witnessed the skating prowess of Shain Lapointe, I was invited out to a session with several bladers from the Skatebarn team. We found ourselves in north Seattle skating a school. The group focused its efforts sessioning a 13-stair down rail. Just another down rail, each skater unloading their bag of technical tricks with all their different variations. After a few warm up tricks, Shain dissapeared from the group. He was no where to be seen. Then he exploded from a hallway of the school, leapt over a set of stairs, the 15-foot runway to the rail, narrowly missing a disaster Top Soul. He dragged his armpit on the rail and knelt at the bottom of the stairs. I expected the worst. After a few moments Shain got up to his feet, looked up, and spoke a few words that I will never forget: “I got this.” On his next attempt, Shain landed the Disaster Top Soul.

There are very few skaters that are of so few words. Shain Lapointe just skates. From what could be just another day skating, he easily becomes that catalyst in which average becomes extraordinary. He performs stunts that should not be attempted, and often, never repeated.

What is your full name?

Shain Scott LaPointe

How long have you been skating?

Um… 8–9 years, I believe.

Who are/were your influences in skating, and why?

When I first got started, I would have to say my brother, Jermaine, because he was the one that introduce me to the game. Other than him, I would have to say Louie Zamora, Shima, Jon Julio, and Dustin Latimer. Once I saw those guys skate, I knew I was hooked. Their style, and the tricks they did, and what they did it on. I knew I was going to love this sport.

Shain Lapointe

What do you like to skate?

Mostly down chill rails… but what I love to skate the most would have to be hammers. Don’t know why, but I get a high from doing big drop rails or something I could get hurt on. Ha ha, it’s pretty weird, I know.

Describe your style of skating?

This is a hard question, because I don’t know my style. People can take it as they want. GOOD OR BAD… I just skate, ha ha.

What does rollerblading mean to you?

Making new friends, traveling, keeping me out of trouble. The best years of my life are because of rollerblading.

Shain Lapointe

What keeps you motivated to skate?

I would have to say my close friends. They see something that I don’t see in myself when it comes to skating. All the people I skate with keep me motivated. Getting juiced off one another. Just going out, getting deals, and just having fun doing it.

How has skating changed for you in the last couple of years?

Hmm… Well, tricks are getting crazier, and what I have noticed is that there is a lot of little kids that are killing it nowadays. Can’t wait to see what these kids will be doing 3–4 yrs from now. Ha ha, can you imagine?

Shain Lapointe

Tell me about a defining moment in rollerblading for you?

Getting my first sponsor, winning my first contest, and getting to travel because of skating.

What would you like to do with skating?

I would like to keep getting better, learning new tricks. I would love to travel a lot more, hopefully out of the country someday. Keep meeting new people. See how far I can take skating and how far skating can take me.

What is your relationship with Razors?

Amazing! I couldn’t thank them enough for the hook up. I want to do as much as I can for them.

Shain Lapointe

Where would you like to see rollerblading in the next few years?

On top! TV shows, movies, documentaries, ha ha. I want to see a lot more kids skating contests. I want to see skaters just keep on pushing the limits of the sport and see where it will take us all.

Anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?

Yeah, buddy! Mom, Dad, Jermaine Wade, A.J Gallegos, Erik Allas, Skate Barn West, Karma and Ed, Razors, Geoff Acers, Rob Inks, Bobby Tateishi, Kawika Jarman, Josiah Blee, Jake Dotson, Marlo Love, Brandon Weller, Jeremy Townsend, Vinny Minton, Ivan Narez, ONE Magazine, and my feet. Everyone that has help me get to where I am.
