Who is Julien Cudot?

What have you thought about some of the other edits in the contest? Whose have impressed you the most?
Like I said before, the one that impressed me the most was Sizemore’s. His went further than all the others. Demetrios’ amazed me a lot, and it also amazed me that it seems people didn’t seem to understand how harddd all of the tricks were. I also liked Mathias’ a lot; I didn’t expected this from him, and I was thinking his edit would be more chill, but that was a good surprise! Howard did some really impressive shit also (and I truly appreciate his edit even if I’m aware he’s one of the ones who probably like to talk shit on me from what I heard. Anyway, he had a sick haircut at the World Finals two years ago in Detroit! Still in my heart ahahah 😉 ) And of course Nils’ one is so fucking massive. Stylish and skating at his best, as usual!

You have skated in a lot of traditional contests and now two WRS Uploaded competitions. Which of the two different formats do you prefer?
Actually, I just participated in one WRS Uploaded. I think it’s a good idea and it changed our perception of a competition. It also means people don’t travel to a contest and have their chance to participate with everybody, or to experience it together with spectators. They too can’t afford to travel to assist to a world final. But I also think this system isn’t fair at all ’cause it’s judged on quality of video, weather, etc… so it makes advantages/disadvantages according to where you live, and if you’re able to have good camera, good cameraman/editor, but it’s the skater who is judged not the cameraman/editor. That’s what I think.

Besides, I must admit I prefer a real comp, like a big jam session of 20 minutes, with five skaters in the park going bigger and bigger, getting juiced. With all the competitors and public, there is a more direct link. That for me is a real comp.

You recently came to Woodward. How was the trip? Tell us about what happened with the rental car…
Yes. I went there with a friend (Pascal Aymard). It was so nice, you can’t imagine how long we were waiting to skate these parks, and the staff welcomed us so nicely. We were lacking of nothing, and it was also nice to skate with Nick’s (Pisciotta) friends for three days: Joey Scanella, Brandon Ford, Curtis Cauddle, Mike Koliner, Montre… The only bad thing was that ’cause of the weather we were only able to skate the outside skateparks for two of our days there.

We also had some good parties in State College, drinking from the bottle at the McDonalds and then partying in the student house we managed to get into ha, ha, ha.

Fuck the problem with the car, it was actually so stupid. Ha ha ha! We just wanted a full tank of gas but we put gas from the wrong side in ’cause we didn’t read the manual correctly…*

[*Editor’s Note: Nick Pisciotta explained to me that he got a phone call from Mike Bennet and Maverick from Woodward early in the morning while Julien was there, explaining that Julien and his friend Pascal were on the way to State College and accidently filled their rental car with diesel at a gas station near camp. After the people realized they didn’t have hundreds of dollars to pay for repairs, they removed the gas tank and drained it for him free of charge, gave him some money, and sent them on their way. I’m not sure Julien understands how fucking crazy that is. Woodward, PA is one of the few places in the United States where that would go down.]

You’ve been to America a few times now. What are some differences between France and the United States that stand out to you?
I don’t know if you are talking about rollerblading differences or just general differences, but anyway, what I truly became aware of during this last trip in the US is that a majority of people are so welcoming and okay to talk with you and help you in any case, even if they have something to do. Like, I don’t know if it’s fake, but everybody seems more happy and juiced here than in France. Real or not, I liked it anyway.

In skating I have noticed that people in general are truly more technical and look like they have good countrol and so much precision. And there are really, really a lot of guys not really well-known that are pure street killers, people like Brian Arnold or Mike Koliner really impressed me a lot more than some of today’s pros. I skated with Mike at Woodward without knowing at first it was him, ’cause I’d only seen him on video (watch his section in “Shot from Dark,” you will die). I hope to skate with those guys someday in the streets!

Do you ever chill with Taig Kris?
Ha ha ha, epic question. I used to skate with him in some vert ramp shows when I was a kid. He taught me some shit about vert skating. I don’t know what to say about him ’cause I don’t know him well enough to talk about his personality. I agree that a lot of things he did on TV was really shamefull for our community, but you can’t deny that he made the “agressive” inline more well-known and accessible for the public at large; even if those people will directly think about Taig Kris and his jump from the Eiffel Tower. If you talk to those people about skating it’s still those people who’re gonna buy agressive skates for their little kids who saw Taig Kris on TV. Not to mention that he’s for sure the only guy who is rich today thanks to his passion of skating, even if these days he does lot of things that we find stupid and disgusting… it’s just his choice.

I’m sure all Americans respect Julien, he’s a bad ass blader, I think they’re just so certain someone was hacking the website to vote for him that they’ve all got their panties in a bunch, but it is a legitimate reason to be upset if it is true, but no one knows if it is true…
