Unlike skateboarding, rollerblading culture has never been strictly defined by punk rock. So in terms of skateboarding’s obsession with accusing us of copying everything they do, blading’s on-again, off-again love affair with hip-hop has actually been our most punk rock quality. It was nothing new to blading when Chris and Cortney Brown stepped onto the scene, but they did it in a way no one else had done before, and did it at a time when skateboarding’s most visible representative was Bam Margera. When they were literally branding themselves as Jackasses, we were showing the world we weren’t just some corny trend, we were creating something real. And even though the Brown Brothers have moved on from blading, their influence has never left.
