SRSC 2010

For more than six months, we (R-A-D) met up once a week to make rollerblading shine on this one day with the Scandinavian Real Street Contest (SRSC). The finals of the street contests in all of Scandinavia.

As I walked the course of the first spot, with fellow friends and colleagues in the association R-A-D, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement of what was going to happen. I tried, as all skaters do, to imagine lines people might do in this architectural masterpiece called Ice-Hills.

This place is the most creative park I have ever seen. Every obstacle has at least two or three different angled slopes, and everything slides, everything slides as if it was ice… If you hit the curbs right, the park is a snowy wonderland of excitement filled with gaps, grinds, cess-slides, wall rides and gaps. But if you hit them wrong… your are getting hurt in ways you never imagined.

By one o’clock most people had arrived, including Demitrios George, Billy O’Neill, Nick Lomax, Olav Norheim, and Frederik Anderson, just to name a few of the many people who came a long way to the SRSC this year. From Denmark the whole Danish rollerblading family was gathered, including names such as Kaare Lindberg, Christian Berg, Anders Rishøj, Seth Nicolas, Magnus Packness, Tom Ahlqvist, Jacob Juul and Alex Popovic. People where juiced, and over 40 bladers entered the competition, which was to be judged by the best of them all — Kåre Lindberg, Jacob Juul and Billy O’Neill.

Red Bull showed up and gave everybody a free drink. Timm Kittlis hit a high curb with a stylish sweat stance and a cool looking Parallel Rocket Fishbrain. Young Gun Theodor, or as he is known, TheoDOOM, did a crazy Top Soul on an acid curb few tried to skate. Seth Nicolas, once again this year, pushed his skating, doing a huge Bank to Wallride 180 and went on to do an AO Pornstar to Backslide to Topsoul Rewind on a waist-high curb. Local hero out of Jutland, Martin Gade, hit a 720 gap and a mean-ass Back Savannah, while Jimmy Wolfhagen did a stylish AO soul on the black concrete waist-high curb. The crowd was pleased and everyone cheered along as the master of high jumping, Demitrios George, was shredding his shin to blood while busting out 270 True Topsouls, True Top Porns and AO Top Acids on the waist-high curb.

This year we tried to keep to spots within rollin’ distance, and right between the first spot and the killer final spot was this gnarly, belly-high green kryptonic rail, with a shitty run-up and a busy road just at the end of it — and of course in a tight squeeze with a sign-post on the left hand side; a Danish spot if you know one. There where a couple complaints about the spot, but in the end the skaters showed their skills and pulled off some awesome tricks. Demitrios George did a nice Backslide and an almost Darkside AO Soul. Nick Lomax landed a Soul 360 Soul, and local hero and young gun Alex Popovic hammered a True Top Porn and a Back Farv up the rail. The street was blocked by people watching and the atmosphere was good. The competitions only Australian, Marlon Mascarenhas, hit the rail with a low, stylish True Miszou and an even lower Fishbrain, while Michael Dalgaard tried to kill himself with a Royale on an Acid Drop window ledge, 10 feet of the ground. Demitios George followed him with a Topsoul on the same ledge and continued on to skate the green killer rail, with some sick trick I missed.

This turned in to a do-or-die session between the most committed skaters in the competition. The rail was, and is, crazy. A massive acid kink-rail, with a kink twice as long as the two down-going parts of the rail. This rail is in no way possible to bitch-attempt. You have to stay right on the rail when the kink begins, or else you’re in so deep you can kiss your ass goodbye! And so did the poor Australian guy Marlon Mascerenhas, with a rocket speed Royale down the rail, leaning too much into the rail and eventually jumping down to the ground and dislocating his right knee. Too bad Marlon, hope you get well soon. Olav Norheim did a crazy Sweatstance along with Christopher Herdman who did the same. Local hero Alex Popovic did a Soul to AO Pornstar and the crowd was pleased. Demitrios George was a showman, and really got the crowd going. A whole family who was having a picnic nearby joined the DG-show, along with a lot of the people in the surrounding apartments. All in all, a good day for rollerblading. In the heat of the fight against this monster of a rail Demitrios George hit his head on a post, and blood was gushing down from his left eye. But, refusing to give up, he laced a wicked Soul to Soyale to AO Pornstar.

The winner was the mean killer-bee Demitrios George, awarded with 500€ and a lot of skating accessories. Second place went to Olav Norheim, and third, the local hero Alex Popovic — only seventeen years old. This of course means that Olav became the Scandinavian champ, and the first in six years to knock Jacob Juul off his throne. This earned him a 1000 Danish kroner and a pair of vintage “side-by-sides” in Scandinavian colors. In the young gun competition, TheoDOOM was first, which earned him a 100 € voucher to Ignition shop, and Jack was second, closely followed by local gunslinger Oscar Bjørn-Rosager.

After months of preparation the Scandinavian Real Street Competition was a success. Rollerblading made itself look good, and people witnessed the true sweat-dripping core of rollerblading. A lot went our way, and everybody got something to think and dream about until next year. Thanks to all who showed up, helped out, and sponsored the event. See ya’ next year. — Michael Buhl (@ RAD)
