1st Annual Haggard City Showdown

Bakersfield, California, home to Intuition Skate Shop, gets in on the local comp action with the addition of the Haggard City Showdown, coming off its first year at the Ronka Indoor Skatepark. Providing a great new event for central California skaters and anyone within short driving distance, event organizers managed to bring together talented, established bladers and a mix of the up-and-coming crop of young skaters that are just starting to make their mark on our community. Read on for Matt’s wrap up on the event plus pics from Casey Warren, and get inspired to do your part to grow the scene where you live. Way to go, Haggard City crew!

The brainchild of local blader Cody Sixx Norman, the 1st Annual Haggard City Showdown was held May 12th in Merle Haggard’s native Bakersfield. Ronka Indoor Skate Park and their owners, Suzie and Jeff, were more than gracious hosts – even allowing / working with Sixx to build permanent new grind box obstacles onto their course! (Stop by for a session!)

Friday Night, May 11th was a warm up session, offering locals and out-of-towners their first chance to skate the revamped ramps. Ronka stayed open until 11pm, giving all bladers more than their fill of pre comp masonite madness. The contest went off on Saturday May 12th, with solid turnout for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions. Intuition Skate Shop had a pop up shop with the essentials like wheels, bearings, buckles, allan keys…and of course, a limited batch of World Famous Homemade Intuition Cookies.

Chad Hornish / Liu Kang

Danny Garcia / Back Royale

When the dust had settled, the top three were announced in each category, including the $500 cash prize for the hard fought Advanced division. We had competitors from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Arizona, Fresno, Kerman, and all over Kern County show up in force. It was beyond a successful weekend of blading here in Bakersfield, and we are already talking about making next year bigger and better!

Maximum respect to our gracious hosts — Suzie and Jeff at Ronka Skate Park — for running a world class, family-friendly skate park in central California.

Bakersfield’s favorite felon himself Merle Haggard once sang, “I’ve never been nobody’s idol, but at least I got a title, and I take a lot of pride in what I am.” And there’s plenty for bladers to be proud of here in Intuitionland.
