Dereck Larsen has unfortuniately been in and out of the rolling scene here in the Twin Cities area for the past couple of years with a wrist injury. Finally, after surgery and countless months of healing, he is back at it hard and throwing down crazy tricks as usual. On this particular day we got together on a whim and met up in the early afternoon to try and get a quick photo to broadcast his return to the scene. This ledge was a virgin before Dereck and I got to her, so we gave it a good brick rubbin’ and a few fresh coats of wax to ease her pain. It has a small drop-off to the right and remnants of the old handrail that used to run down the center of the ledge. There is still a good-sized piece of metal from the old support bar, towards the bottom of the ledge, that is fairly sharp and could do some damage if hit improperly, adding more difficulty to the spot. The hardest part to this obsticle is that it is only about three inches above the stair edges, so there is little room for error, and you literally have to drop to it slightly to lock any tricks. Dereck originally wanted to lace a fishbrain but, being one of his first days back on the blades with his wrist still in a brace for safety, he played it safe and laced this super fast Top Porn instead, with signature DKL steez. It took a few tries, and some close encounters with the leftover metal shards until he got it down, but it came out nice and without hesitation. Another thing to know about this ledge is that it runs right off onto the sidewalk and directly into Franklin Ave., which also played a small factor in this stunt. Luckily, Dereck rides flat so he can turn on a dime like a real man and outrun any automobiles that may come his way. Keep your eyes open for more from DKLarsen in the near future because he is loose again… and that fishbrain will probably happen soon as well.
