Issue #12 workhorse John Haynes just sent us a new PHOTO JOURNAL, and we’ve got it ready to share. Yes, he shot a whole lot of the new issue. Yes, John also shot the Haffey 540 sequence we’re using as the site header right now, and no, he didn’t get hit by a fast-moving blader or car in the process of getting this shot. Read how it all went down. — ONE
I hate when people do tricks requiring them to be pulled by a car. I ride a bike everywhere I go, and though I mooch plenty of those with cars, the idea of going faster than your body can propel itself freaks me out a little. This trick is a perfect example of going too fast. Jeff Dahamen found a perfect bump to pretty steep back royale revert up this rail, but staying clear of the trajectory of the speeding pull car and Jeff were more difficult than I would have thought. I ended up shooting at a longer focal length than I normally do, I have a 70-200 zoom that I use for most of my long shots, but I seldom shoot longer than 100mm. This was at 150, givinig me more compression than I care for, but I really hate getting hit by cars.
Dodging traffic was not my only problem on this shot. I put a c-stand with a light boomed over the slant of the hill at the top for my key light. I put a sandbag on the stand but it still managed to fall (luckily in to bushes). I ended up having the light coming from an angle further back than I had anticipated. My other light was high camera right, which really popped the fallen leaves. — John Haynes
All of it is just too sick to mention.
That shot of the five over the road is spectacular and the highlights on Dahamen and the leaves make that shot just pop.
You and the Minnesota kids are welcome to crash at my place again this year when we bring back the Iowa River Rumble.
Very nice lighting, man. Great job of showcasing a cool spot.
