Many of you may not recognize the name Howie Bennett, but he’s one of the sickest skaters I have had the privilege of skating with. He makes a photographer’s job easy because his style is so good. Howie and I had talked about getting a unique shot to show off his fresh new turquoise skates and I thought it would be the perfect chance to try out a technique called HDR (high dynamic range), a series of shots at different exposures that are combined to make one super-detailed photo. HDR is a technique that is hard to make look good, but if done right can produce a natural, yet dramatic effect. I haven’t seen very much of this in rollerblading photography, but I think it suits it very well. — Josh Hayes

mel gibson approves so use the extra confidence instilled and remember that in order to promote rollerblading u need more than a soul on that rail if it was a bigger rail(bigger is better) i would approve, maybe. u need overall more difficulty maybe a chin-check woul help

Not a fan of the HDR personally. The angle is a bit dramatic squeezing his face too.

I am a bit confused here, because with HDRs you take a mutliple of the same image at different shutter speeds while keep the aperature the same (ensuring that the depth of field doesn’t change), however, how were you able to do this with rollerblading? I only ask because when you do HDRs you usually are capturing a subject, for the most part, that is stationed. I usually use the HDR program in photoshop, so I am not to indepth with the whole thing. mr hayes which you please explain?

Howie Bennett!? Haven’t heard that name since the ORIGINAL Skatebarn days.

  • David Andrew - October 14th, 2009

Ryan you can make HDR’s by just editing the exposure of one image, which will be the case here.

This photo looks cool as shit.

I like the super distortion of that lense too. I like the way the spiraled support rails look at that short of a distance.

Howie does look like the baby of the devil or an alien or something though. Crazy black eyes.

p.s. This concludes 3 soul/topsouls for your photo journals Josh. Let’s see something different. A mistrail? Something a/o?! COME ON JOSH! WE NEED SOME VARIETY!

  • Josh M Hayes - October 27th, 2009

yeah I noticed that they were all souls tricks too but I didn’t mean for it to be that way it just happened. I promise the next will not be a soul hahaha
