Topside Acid

This seemed like one of the last few sunny, dry, and yet still cold days we’d get before the English winter arrived this year, so Dean and I went out to make the most of it. This spot wasn’t one we went out to shoot; no, this was one of the typical blader drive-by, head turning, near-car crash-causing spots. You know the ones. It looked steep. It was steep, and despite the gravel and dirt run-up, it was good to go. A few sweeps of a broom later, and this Top Acid got sent. From a photography view point, I thought about going beyond the classic fish-eye shot, but an awkwardly-placed car (behind camera) ruined most ideas, and sometimes you can’t beat a classic. This was shot using my old school Russian manual 16mm fisheye at f/8, 1/250, using the sun as my main light and a flash at camera right working as a fill. I thought this lens has had its day, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the results I’m still getting from it. — Si Cox
