5. BS.1 Light

There are typically two schools of thought when it comes to Brandon Smith — you either love and appreciate his laid-back, effortless style or you continue to overlook him for flashier, younger up-and-comers. Either way, one thing cannot be argued about this edit, which so perfectly captures Brandon’s personality and style that it is hard to imagine him ever making anything better. Which is a bold statement considering his white-suited Monx and Mr. Roboto-themed Dyna sections are two of the most memorable in blading’s history.

4. SSM John Bolino

This is nothing less than a complete and total urban annihilation from John Bolino. Technical precision mixed with what can be best described as a willful ignorance of how big, fast and far one can actually go on blades. Unfortunately, as metal as John’s blading may be, it steers the edit into nearly unwatchable territory at times and takes away far more than it adds.

3. Richie Eisler High Scores

Although technically a compilation of Richie’s best from 2011, it is hard to ignore anything that Richie releases. When watching Richie rollerblade it becomes hard to imagine any sort of technical combination that he would not be able to execute perfectly. The precision and control that he carries with him on rollerblades is unmatched.

2. Cityhopper: Sven Boekhorst

This edit from European powerhouse Sven Boekhorst brings something to the table that is so painfully lacking in all of rollerblading — ambition. Although sprinkled with technical missteps and some minor flaws in execution, there has been no other project since “What Do You Believe In” that has taken such a bold leap into the theatrical arena. Where so many others are content with blading what is simply in front of them, Sven takes it to a whole other level by giving himself the opportunity to blade obstacles that would otherwise go untouched. Nevermind the timing, consistency and patience involved with executing such tricks while dealing with an enormous amount of additional variables. AKA, you are not only getting kicked out, but the bike that is pulling you needs to get in place, your friends are making sure no one stands in front of the ramp, you have to wait for the copter-cam to rev up, and this will be your one and only chance to land the trick.

1. Valo and Vibralux proudly present the ABVX.1

Well… what can you even say about Alex Broskow? He is deliberate in everything he does. There is no other rollerblader before him that has finely tuned and perfected every single aspect of both his blading and persona like Alex Broskow. In reducing him to anything else you accomplish nothing more than shining a spotlight on your own ignorance. From camera angle to execution it is hard to find anything comparable in 2012.

Honorable Mentions

Long Time, No See

Barcelona 2012 Sessions “The Early Days”

Although these two selections lack the groundbreaking blading that others on the list feature, they both excel far beyond anything else mentioned with outstanding filming, precise scores and exemplary production value. Take notes.

Great article. I really enjoy reading DK’s observations. I would like to see more coverage of lesser known bladers though. There were a lot of great edits from 2012 that did not get as much attention as they should of just because they featured unknowns or new faces. I am not taking away anything from this article, but I’d like to see something similar focusing more on the edits that were missed by our community.

You forgot Ryan Sibbio …. 🙁 I mean: there’s no doubt that his edit is in the top 10 of the year. Come on DK!
