BLADE LIFE: Lyle Shivak drop rail slam

Hey ONE, I’m currently in San Francisco, but before I left Santee, Lyle had a really big fall off a three-story kinked rail and ended up going to the hospital. I spoke to the guys and they said I could email you this… maybe you want to put it up on the site with the pics from the day. Pretty scary time but he’ll be okay. — Dale Travers

Every time we head out shooting photos all the guys usually have spots and tricks in mind. I’ve been in Santee for two weeks now and this was the last day before I was leaving for SF. Lyle Shivak had a trick in mind today, and seeing it was my last day, he was keen to get it done to get the pic.

We went to this hammer and straight away Damien tells me Carlos already did it, but Lyle wanted to lace it as well. This drop kink is steep and the drop in high. Around 25 feet high. Over the time I have been here, I’ve gotten to a point where I had confidence in Lyle doing this trick. He is good, real good, but you can never be prepared when things go wrong.

Lyle was warming up on the bottom two down parts with ease. He was scared, and the boys were scared too. After setting up, I gave up him the thumbs up that I was ready and so was Nick with the video camera. The Frontside Royale attempt went wrong when he just committed right over the top of the rail and his foot came off. We all gasped… He tried to save himself and grabbed for the rail, but didn’t get good a grip. Still falling, he flipped over and landed in the sand, taking the fall on his head and his shoulder, knocking himself out. Nick, being the closest, gasped and ran over over to a lifeless Lyle, lying in the sand. Nick recalls actually being really scared for his friend, as Lyle was not moving, his mouth open.

Luckily, Lyle did wake after a few seconds, and we kept him still while trying to assess the situation. Obviously, the crowd, just seeing what they saw, someone called 911, and the police showed up with lifeguards, followed by an ambulance. I will always remember Lyle crying out in pain while we were processing what just happened. Then Lyle got up, tried to push the police away, then realized how much pain he was in, then collapsed again. Paramedics started to help him and braced his neck, trying to sort out his injuries. Damien took charge and almost argued with the paramedics about the cost of his trip to hospital, but in the end it was best to get him there as soon as possible.

This has been one of my biggest shocks while traveling here, and something that will always linger in my mind about going out and shooting photos. I personally have never pushed anyone into doing tricks and hammers for a photo. If they are willing to do something, I’m willing to shoot it. What I saw today in San Diego was pretty frightening, but we are lucky for Lyle, this story has a sort of happy ending. He ended up with minor head injuries, a punctured lung and a broken clavicle, and is staying in the hospital for a while for observation, but he is going to be fine and does not need an operation. Seeing the whole thing was captured on film, the doctor wanted to use it for future medical seminars. Look out for the next Santee video for the whole event documented in detail.

I guess the lesson is this: As tough as you think you are, there are things out there that you can’t control. Skating drop rails is dangerous, so next time you see one, please think twice about the things that can go wrong. — Dale Travers

  • Adam Morris - April 10th, 2009

Nasty. Sorry to see this. I don’t know Lyle, but I’ve been a big fan of his skating since “Street Dwellaz 2” (at least, I think that’s the video). I’ve always been disappointed that he hasn’t received more coverage in the blading media, so I’m especially sorry to see that he suffered such bad injuries while attempting what would have made one hell of a magazine photo. His video sections and random footage in Daily Bread’s fifth video, “No One’s Children,” “Demode,” “Opus,” among others, and most recently the ONE video, are rock solid. I mean, the guy nailed hurricane top soul on a drop rail in that Daily Bread video like seven years ago, well before that trick’s time.

Keep it up, man! (And here’s to a speedy recovery, of course.)

  • Ponyboy - April 10th, 2009

Lyle Shivak is a prime example of a blader who doesnt give a fuck. Hes not going to pussy out, hell skate drop rails all day go to the hospital for stiches then go the skatepark for more klips. And hell be able to perform this routine for years to come bc he is not a pussy. Remember this all u tight pant wearing emo kids with no time to skate or im too cool and way thug enough so instead of going blading Im gonna pick up my shit eating mexican friend and were gonna lick each others peens.

Freddy I almost forgot about that. Inappropriate!

  • Danny - April 11th, 2009

A very unfortunate turn of events for one of the most under-rated bladers in my eyes. Lyle is the type of blader that once you see his name come up on the screen before his trick, you know its going to be hammer town. I don’t know him personally but I wouldn’t think this trick was beyond his skill, He just zigged when he should’ve zagged and it happens to all of us even on simple tricks. Hope you get better and all the best in your road to recovery.

  • Michael - April 12th, 2009
