Sean Keane * Topside Torque Soul to Fakie

Our NorCal photo man Nick Korompilas comes through with a lil’ diddy from fellow Sacramento blader Sean Keane. Check out the whole deal and get a scoop on why Nick wasn’t sold on some of the choices that he made in shooting this generally pretty fresh clip. Steep, skinny square rail anyone? — ONE

Sean Keane * Topside Torque Soul to Fakie

Recently, once again street skating in Sacramento has become scarce, but Sean Keane and I decided to go out to shoot some pictures for the day anyway. We met up and skated some random spots for awhile, but didn’t find much. By about 7:00 pm I remembered this rail and suggested we go check it out, so we did. There are a lot of unseen “problems” with this rail; for instance a huge crack right before, as well as being skinny, steep and square; but Sean was down anyways. While setting up for this shot, I had the perfect angle in mind. Back, behind and to the right a little bit — just enough so that the sunset could peak through and give a nice back light. Unfortunately, because of the sun I was getting a glare in any decent long shot angle I could think of, which is why I ended up using the (boring) fisheye angle.

To light this shot I used three strobes, although looking back on it two would have probably been better. Using two flashes would have made the lighting a lot more “dramatic” instead of being flat due to the third flash. Anyways, I had a light directly above me aimed towards the subject, obviously with the main purpose of lighting him up; another flash was directly behind him to help separate him from the background a little bit better; and lastly, a strobe to camera left in front of the metal post. There is not too much else to say about this, aside from the fact that Sean laced this Top Torque Soul to Fakie more perfectly than you can imagine. — Nick Korompilas

I really like the setting-sun feel to this one, especially with his long hair starting to blow back like so. Gives it a cool kind of loose, end-of-the day mood. And the fisheye angle does something I like: emphasizes the ivy (or whatever all that green is).

Still remember skating some dope spots with Sean back in the day when he was out here in the desert. Look at that boy go! Look at all that hair!
