Superstitions are some of the weirdest things that I have encountered while rolleblading. They seem to always hold a special significance for me when I’m out skating, or when I’m about to go skate…
For me, there are two things that come to mind. First is this WWJD bracelet I wear on my left hand. When I go out and skate I must have it on, no matter what. Keep in mind I am not at all religious, at all, but I feel the bracelet keeps me safe and focused every time I go out and skate. I found it when I first started skating, and I’ve worn it ever since. People always look at me weird when I they initially see it, but I usually just ignore explaining it. To me it’s something that keeps me in that positive mindset. The other thing that comes to mind is a small fist punch on every obstacle I skate. I don’t necessarily do it right when I get to a spot, but at one point when I’m warming up, I hit the spot a little bit to break the ice. To me, it sets the pain indicator in my body to “On,” to be ready in case I fall or mess up.
These superstitions don’t really control me as a skater, but they’re things I’ve noticed over the years. I think every person has their own unique way of getting themselves in the mindset to skate, or to land a trick. Hope you all enjoy rollerblading, and continue to go out and continue your own way of landing sweet tricks. — Jon Fromm
