WEB ROLL #18: Straight F-ing Gibberish

Krans sent this in with a note that he thought it might not make any sense. Hence the self-appointed title. But with some commentary on “Whip It” and other instances of blading creeping up in mainstream channels and how we can benefit from it with open minds, dude is right on the money. Preach on brother Krans! Educate the masses. We know you will next week too. — ONE

It’s Always Sunny in Florida

If the Internet is good for anything, it’s about getting everything for free — bootleg movies, TV shows, porn, etc.

Jon Fromm and others know this, so online videos — not just three-minute edits — are gaining in popularity. Fromm’s “Sunny Side Up” is in the works. According to the blog, his “goal is to show you ‘the viewer’ the talents of the skaters down here in Florida, and to recognize their ability.” The reason it’s free is because we’re all poor as shit and love free stuff.

While the video is being made, the site is bringing some pretty decent profiles of local skaters worth checking out, as well as some behind-the-scenes details of what it takes to make a video. All good stuff.

Just like “Hoax II” featured not just skating but the lifestyle of bladers on the road, many blogs have been created to keep hype up for videos.

The upcoming online video Shred ‘Til You’re Dead, kept updated with photos not just of blading, but also food, camping and gun play.

And let us not forget the great updates from the Way Too Much Love Tour posted on Be-Mag about the saga that was traveling in a shitty RV.

Stay with me on this one

It’s looking to be a good time for blading (as if there’s ever a bad time to blade). A serious downfall to the skating industry was when we were taken out of the public eye. For those of you that remember, blading used to be in commercials, featured on Yoo-hoo cans, and all other sorts of places. If you’re new, watch the documentary in “Barely Dead” and you’ll learn what you need to know.

Well, Hollywood might be helping us out here. The Juno-on-wheels roller derby movie “Whip It” seems to be fueling a get-out-the-blades mentality among some people.

How does this help blading, even if it’s just a bunch of girls circling the local park? While I didn’t major in economics, new skate purchases feed the beast from the bottom, creating not only a better public image of people with wheels strapped to their feet, but it also creates more revenue for the skating companies. That means the bills could trickle down to the aggressive side, ultimately meaning more skates, more money for pros and so on.

Rollerblading began as a spinoff of the popular recreational activity. More rec skaters again could mean more aggressive bladers. Am I losing anyone yet?

There’s another movie in the works that will also help out blading: Scott Pilgram vs. The World.

While blading isn’t the main focus, the girl in the movie, Ramona Flowers, is a rollerblading messenger, just as she was in the graphic novel.

And, as Valo posted on its Web site a long time ago, she will be riding Valos.

If you question how much good movies can do for skating, think of how many times people have made “Brink” references to you.

A week of the goods

If there’s any theme to Rollernews this week, it’s new products.

If you’re as impatient as me and don’t feel like looking yourself, here’s what to expect:

— Maybe, just maybe, some new red Stockwell pro models from Xsjado.

— New backpacks from Jug and Ground Control

— Pink wheels from Nouvelle Ligne Association.

— Green USD Albert Hooi Thrones.

— New denim coverings from Vibralux.

Themgoods even had some production photos of the new Baileys

Ubiquitous Item of the Week

Sometimes I wonder where people get their nicknames. Then again, names like Bubba and Loosey kind of fit certain people. Same with Superman and Haffey:

The motherfucker can fucking fly! Holy fucking shit! I know it’s no surprise, but it never gets old.

The “Chris Haffey and friends” edit had nearly every blading site hopping on it like a hungover sorority girl and Plan B.

By the way, those “friends” just happen to be the Remz team. I haven’t been so moved by a video with slow piano music since Two Girls, One Cup.

Comment of the Week

There are very few people in the blading community who could say such a bold thing and have the authority to get away with it. Daniel Kinney, in my mind, is one of those people.

So, since I can’t say “back in the day,” When educating the wee little groms on blading history — like combs in the back pockets, Oxygen aggressive blades and wheelbarrows — I’m using the term “before your balls dropped.”

The horse is dead, but I’ve still got a stick my hand in

Okay, I hate to do this again, but whatever. So a few weeks ago I wrote about David Sizemore and last week pointed out some lame ass attempt to use one thing and call it another.

Well, there was a thread on the Skeptic message board that began with a link to an edit using some very, very familiar clips.

I guess I learned something today: you can point your camera at your TV and throw a crappy song over top of it and label it a “remix.”

So, for the four of you who haven’t seen Sizemore’s skating in the ONEvideo, here it is with a “Remix” song over it.

To it’s “creator” kjdamixer: quit ripping off other people’s work and point your camera at a skater. Thanks, and have a nice day.

Booyah. Shout out in the Web Roll! To clarify the “back in the day” tweet stemmed from listening to the latest Rolling Revival and hearing them bathe in old rollerblading nostalgia. I got sick of it. I don’t want to hear another word about how great Hoax 2, Daily Bread, NISS, Nick Riggle, Videogroove or etc. was.

I want to see the next Hoax 2, I want to see ONE get better, I want the WRS to reach an international stage, I want to see the next Nick Riggle, I want to see the next Videogroove, I want to see rollerblading become better than it ever was “back in the day.”

“Back in the day” is only allowed if you are actually someone moving rollerblading forward. Otherwise the phrase is dead.

    //Rant.

I’m slightly turned on by that movie ad and I like how DK is thinking.

  • Ben Rogers - October 10th, 2009

I am going to continue to say back in the day like it is my fucking job.

  • je - October 10th, 2009

Ben, that’s like deciding you want to be Uncle Rico from NAPOLEON DYNAMITE talking about that freakin’ touchdown pass you woulda/coulda/shoulda made back in high school. “I can throw a football over that mountain!”

  • Mike Opalek - October 12th, 2009

Rollerblading has become better then it ever was!

Brian Krans is awesome. Goodbye to the days where I waste my day away going through my 20 + open tabs consisting of be-mag, rollernews, e-fukt, crazy-shit etc. and hitting F5 every 2 minutes to see if any new comments or posts have been created, meddling over the constant clammier and shit talking. Now I can just sit back and 3-7 it (the number 3 referring to the minimum and 7 referring to the maximum allotment for daily masturbating habit) and wait for Friday to come around.

  • Collin Martin - October 14th, 2009

I agree with everything Daniel said except for the Nick Riggle part. We always can use more Nick Riggle talk.

  • Ben Rogers - October 17th, 2009

I guess I try to use it in a different context. I still skate and love it. I just like to remind people of their roots.

  • Kevin Little - October 18th, 2009

One golf clap for Mr. Kinney, spoken like a true scholar.
