Bilbao is a city located in northern Spain with a population of 900,000 in the metropolitan area, which includes surrounding villages. Bilbao is known for the famous Guggenheim Museum, its gastronomic culture, and the philosophy of the famous football club “Athletic Club de Bilbao.” Keeping with this proud tradition, the Bilbao skating scene has always had a leading role. From the beginning we have had great skaters that have had relevance even internationally. The pioneers of the sport in Bilbao were: Jose Felix Hormaetxe, Borja Fernandez, Azur Villate, Juan Goiricelaya, Jaime Andres, Andres Migue and much of the Infamous “The klave (#k)” Crew. They were the faces of our scene years ago. After 10 years the new faces that have come and gone from Bilbao are: Yuri Botelho, Aritz Ortega, Maria Muñoz, and Ganesh Rios. Being a rollerblader in here is not so easy, due in part to the lack of indoor facilities, as we can have adverse weather. These skaters I mentioned have left the city in search of a new home with more facilities and better weather.
But there is a new generation that currently carries the full weight of the scene. A small but united scene is a small family. 19 years after I started to skate, despite the drawbacks, the scene here is still alive. Expect to see more.
this photo is so good. I can’t get enough of Barcelona, but the urge to check out Bilbao is increasing, especially with images like this!
