There are so many incredible blade scenes around the world, and we think they all deserve a bit more recognition. So we’re pairing up with local photographers everywhere to get a better look at the people and places where bladers are making their mark. Up first is a quick look at some of the skaters that keep the NC scene rolling, with photos and words by Geoff Valcourt. Enjoy!

This one’s for North Carolina, come on and raise up
Take your shirt off, twist it ’round your hand
Spin it like a helicopter… — Petey Pablo, “Raise Up”
North Carolina holds a solid place in rollerblading’s past, present, and future. Legends like Dre Powell, Will Gordon, James Reetzke, Kenny Owens, Montre Livingston, Chris Zink, Jon Cooley, Phil Gripper, and Dylan Hopp have all contributed to our rich history.
We have a thriving industry here in North Carolina. Oak City Skate, hailed as the best skate shop in the U.S. and owned by Long Tonthat, started in Raleigh and now calls a spot just outside Charlotte home. Lawrence Ingraham’s move to Durham created Balance Distribution, brought 50/50 Frames back to life, and introduced Standard, a brand-new boot.
The annual Crowder Power Contest keeps growing, awarding $1,000 to winners in three divisions.
Dylan Kingsolver, Dylan Hopp, Jordan Adams, and I all document the scene sharing the energy and excitement just like James Reetzke and Kenny Owens did before us.
Today, our skating community is expanding, attracting visits from top skaters and nurturing new talent at every Thursday Night Skate at Apex Skate Park.
Come on by and skate with us. The spots are fun, the weather is occasionally far too hot, and the weekend sessions start a little early. We will throw you in the group chat, shoot some pictures and get some clips. — Geoff Valcourt
