Tell us the back story behind “Grab Yo Dick.”
We were in Seattle and there was this kink rail, and Exline wanted me to soul grind it. I told him it was stupid and I didn’t want to get in a battle to do some shit I could do 10 years ago. I bet him he couldn’t do it first try and grab his dick. He laced it and then we started a fuck around deal of grabbing dicks. When the project was still focused on 20 dudes and 20 tricks, people kept passing on spots since they weren’t good enough to make the cut. Well, when I’m driving around eight hours a day, $60 a day, I’d like to see some content. That’s where the dick grab came in. Obstacles you would never want to see in a video, but skating them nonetheless. It’s kind of a jab at skating your standard shit. Might as well grab your dick if you are going to skate a mellow rail, or a knee high ledge. Kids are paying money for this DVD, and the spots we bring to them are worth every penny.
“Charging” had a degree of crispness in the production that “Pariah” doesn’t. Like, no Blu-Ray edition. When we talked with Alex about the project a couple weeks ago, he discussed the shifting goals of the project. What can you add to or say about the evolution of “The 20 Project” to “Pariah”?
There are Blu-Rays; Ivan just printed all the disc faces. This video literally came out two weeks ago, I was editing this son of a gun 18 days ago, and in the meantime I have driven over 3,000 miles, ran a trade show, held a premiere, found a place to live, moved in, got a job, shipped 80% of the Kickstarter, and am just now getting settled in. There will be Blu-Ray editions in time.vBaby steps.
As far as it not being like “Charg!ng,” “Charg!ng” was a tour video, kids hated on it — too much fluff not enough content. “Pariah” has as many clips as “Charg!ng,” practically, we just cut out the fat. Made something you could put into the DVD player and it could loop continuously without having to skip scenic shots or watch us run around having fun. Some kids don’t like to think we have fun, they don’t like us not taking life soooo seriously, which is a shame. Look at all the hate the dick grab edit got.
“20 Project” transformed into this video partly because of injury, and partly because people weren’t feeling the idea of only 20 tricks once we got on tour. It was stifling their spot and trick selection. Some days we would go entire sessions without finding something cool enough to be included as one of their 20 tricks.
Which premiere was more fun for you — last year or this year?
I don’t remember either.
Do you have a favorite section in the video?
I really like how Montre’s turned out. I’ve never had a chance to work with him, and he banged the whole thing out in 24 days. Favorite song is Farm’s. Favorites are so hard to have since I really like all of them. From a freshness standpoint though, Montre’s sticks out to me most because I’ve never worked with him.
