The Sunday Session Experiment

Louie Zamora

Louie Louie, or should we say “Louis”? Real quick — tell people where we met.
It is actually Luis, but you can call me Louie Louie. We met in Akron during my very first traveling experience to rollerblade. Eric Schrijn and I flew to Ohio with Coach Opalek to film for “Day of the Rope.” I was so excited to skate something new, and for it to be in another state was incredible to me at the time. I didn’t know what to expect, but the spots in Akron and Cleveland turned out to be amazing. I will never forget the infamous ledges at the University of Akron, they angled up so you could lock them like a rail. First time I ever did AO Top Porn on a down ledge! We skated with you guys for a good 3-4 days in your city… and Opalek’s parents were super nice.

You were blading in the very first Sunday Session, called “San Diego Skateplaza Sunday,” and you killed it. These sessions definitely got going because you were coming out. So special thanks for that, homie.

How about for you, what was it like seeing footage online the same week you filmed it?
Thanks! It was really cool to see the clips in a dope edit the same week it was filmed. It got me motivated, and pushed me to get better because of the amazing talent I was rolling with. My favorite session was with Hayden Ball and Oliver Prado hitting up the Chula skate plazas. I got my cess slide to grinds back that day!

You changed blades a couple times during the past five months… how has that process of getting dialed in been for you?
It has been really fun trying out new skates in the past year. It definitely brought me up to speed on who was making the best skates to fit my style of blading. I knew I was going to try several brands because I wanted to truly know which ones I felt most comfortable with. I used to HAVE to skate on certain brands and missed the freedom to explore quite a bit. I got to do that, while getting my confidence back at the same time. Thanks to all that have sent me skates, wheels, bearings and clothes in the past year, I really appreciate the support. I am really looking to find a skate I love, and stick to it for the long run. I found that skate now, THANK YOU JON JULIO.

Having filmed in San Diego since the beginning, how’d we do? We manage to get around and show some of the city’s diversity?
I have been all around San Diego for years on rollerblades. I think you guys covered a lot of the OG spots, and a lot of new ones. The diversity has been great, and so has this “new” GPS Technology, ha ha. I had a lot of fun rocking big schools with the various crews. That is my favorite thing to do, skate big schools with a lot of people, all day.

What is your favorite clip from our Sundays? You had some freaking hot ones…
If I had to pick ONE clip, which I do in this case, I would pick the trash bin fishbrain to drop royal on the down ledge at one of the plazas in Chula. I like this particular one because it’s something only a blader could make cool. I love getting creative in places it seems like there is not much to do. In a close second pick, I like the fact that I got my chess slide to ao top souls on lock again… I wanted to do one of those again pretty bad. Lastly, I liked the disaster royale I did in one of the early sessions. Only because I did that same disaster a long time ago in my youth, and it gave me a sense of confidence to get this whole thing crackin’ again.

We all got to spend a lot of time with each other and I think got to know each other better than we did before the sessions. Not to put you on the spot (Translation: You’re in the hot seat, bruh.), did anyone in particular’s blading or attitude or vibe really stand out to you?
Definitely! Bladin’ Hayden Ball was just incredible to watch, and I got to meet a new kid that I saw a lot of potential in — Oliver Prado. I also got to see Russell Day destroy a lot of spots; dude can really skate everything. Overall, everyone that came out to the Sunday Sessions had a positive attitude, and knew they were bringing their A game each time. I like to see that friendly shredder in everyone.

All right well we look forward to getting out there again soon. Got something else ready to pop off…

Thanks again, Louie!
No Problem ONE Mag, THANK YOU for giving me an opportunity to skate with great people, and for getting me up to speed with blading these days. Hit me up next sesh! PEACE
